3 Disciplines for Seeking Clarity and Achieving High Performance

High performance is not a mystery and is not reserved for a select few. It’s a set of habits that anyone can cultivate and master with effort and dedication. You can elevate your performance and reach new heights in your personal and professional life.

Remember, incorporating these habits into your daily routine is not a one-time thing. It requires consistent effort, commitment, and a willingness to learn and grow. It’s a journey, not a destination.

Many people struggle with a lack of clarity, which can leave them feeling unfulfilled and unmotivated. Fortunately, there are habits and practices you can adopt to gain clarity and achieve high performance in all areas of your life.

In his book "High Performance Habits," renowned author and performance coach Brendan Burchard outlines three essential disciplines for seeking clarity: Envisioning the Future Four, Determining the Feeling You're After, and Defining What's Meaningful.

Let's explore each of these disciplines in detail and provide actionable tips for incorporating them into your daily life. Whether you're a student, professional, entrepreneur, or someone who wants to live a more fulfilling life, these habits can help you gain clarity, set meaningful goals, and achieve success in all areas of your life.

Envision the Future Four

Envisioning the Future Four involves asking and answering four important questions to create a clear picture of your ideal future:

  1. Who do you want to be each day?

  2. How do you want to interact with others?

  3. What skills must you develop?

  4. How can you make a difference and serve with excellence?

Answering these questions requires some thought, and it's important to be specific and detailed so that you can gain greater clarity about the future.

Who do you want to be each day?

The first question to ask yourself is who do you want to be each day? Consider the qualities and characteristics that you want to embody as a person. Your answer to this question will likely be shaped by your values, beliefs, and experiences.

Remember, this is your future self. Who do you aspire to be? What can you do today to begin to move in that direction? Whatever your answer, it's important to be clear and specific about who you want to be.

How do you want to interact with others?

Understanding how you want to engage with the people around you is important for building positive relationships and creating a fulfilling social life. Your answer to this question may be influenced by your personality, communication style, or desire to make a positive impact on others.

For example, you may want to be a better listener, more assertive, or more empathetic in your interactions with others. Be clear and specific about how you want to engage with others.

What skills must you develop?

Identifying the skills and knowledge that you need to acquire is important for achieving your goals and advancing your career. Your answer to this question may be influenced by your interests, professional goals, or personal development aspirations.

For example, you may need to develop your public speaking skills, learn a new language, or acquire technical expertise in a particular field. Whatever your answer, it's important to be clear and specific about the skills and knowledge you need to acquire.

How can you make a difference and serve with excellence?

This requires you to consider how you can use your talents, abilities, and the skills you're developing to make a positive impact on the world.

For example, you may want to volunteer for a charity, mentor a younger colleague, or create a product or service that solves a problem in your community. Whatever your answer, it's important to be clear and specific about how you want to make a difference and serve with excellence.

Determine the Feeling You're After

As you reflect on the Future Four, what is the feeling you get as you envision your future self? Is it excitement? Nervousness? Apprehension? The second discipline of seeking clarity is determining the feeling you're after. What are the emotions and states of mind that you want to experience in your life? By understanding the feelings you want you'll develop greater clarity.

For example, you may want to feel more joy, peace, or fulfillment in your life. To achieve these feelings, you may need to focus on activities that bring you happiness, prioritize self-care, or seek out meaningful experiences.

Define What's Meaningful

The third and final discipline of seeking clarity is defining what's meaningful. By aligning your work with your future self, and the feeling you're after, you'll be in a better position to discover what's most meaningful to you. By understanding what's meaningful to you, you'll make decisions and take actions that will improve your performance.

For example, 5 years ago I began to envision myself as a university graduate (at the age of 57). I envisioned that feeling of doing the work, interacting with fellow students, and finally crossing the stage at my graduation.

I spent time envisioning the future, determining the feeling of accomplishing a lifelong goal, and attaching meaning to it. I was doing this for myself, and my personal satisfaction. For three years, I stayed focused on these three areas, which helped me to increase my performance toward a specific goal.

Once you have a clear understanding of the future you want to create, the feelings you want to cultivate, and the values you want to embody, you can begin to take action to make your vision a reality. This may involve setting goals, creating a plan, and making changes to your daily routine and habits.

In conclusion, seeking clarity is an essential habit for achieving high performance and personal fulfillment. By envisioning your ideal future, determining the feelings you're after, and defining what's meaningful to you, you can create a roadmap for achieving your goals and living a fulfilling life. Remember to be specific and detailed when answering these questions, and to take action to make your vision a reality. With clarity, purpose, and action, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
